You will be able to enjoy greater comfort and travel like a celebrity without having to pay superstar prices. By following a few simple rules, you will really increase your chances of getting moved up to the front of the plane rather than having to stay in economy class.
For many travellers, paying up to £5000 for a business class ticket in order to fly in greater comfort simply isn’t an option. However, what very few people realise is that most airlines will upgrade passengers from economy class for free – if they meet certain guidelines. In this article, We will pass on some of the things that the check in staff look for and require so that you can take advantage maybe get your upgrade for free. These five top tips come direct from the check in staff of some of the best-known airlines, and are considered by many regular travellers to be the best tips to bag yourself an upgrade.
Tip Number 1:
Look the part. Make sure that you are dressed smartly when you travel. There is almost no chance of getting a free upgrade if you are wearing shorts and a scruffy t-shirt, so at the very least, check in wearing a shirt and trousers. There is no need to go overboard and wear a suit – unless you really want to. The key is to look smart, but not like you’re trying too hard.
Tip Number 2:
Turn up early. The check-in staff know exactly how many passengers are travelling on a particular flight well in advance, so if there are seats to spare in business class, they will know straight away.
Tip Number 3:
Be Polite. Put yourself in the place of the check in staff. Would you reward a person who gives you attitude and starts shouting the odds, or someone who is pleasant and gives them the time of day. There may be 250 people in the queue behind you, so make them remember you. Flirt, smile, use their name, be nice, and you may well get a pleasant surprise.
Tip Number 4:
Be a Frequent Flier. If you join an airline’s frequent flier programme, you are far more likely to be at the front of the queue for an upgrade, as the airline will want to reward you for your loyalty. Even if you do not fly regularly, go to the airline’s website and join their programme online. It will only take a minute or two, and is well worth the time.
Tip Number 5:
Ask. They say that if you don’t ask for something, you won’t get it, so make sure you do – but do it at the right time. If the check in staff look stressed, and no amount of charm has elicited a smile, don’t bother to ask them, wait until you get to the gate. If the counter staff have responded well, when they ask you if you have any specific seat request, be cheeky and say “First Class” to them. It might just work.
Try these tips and let us know if you have any luck! Or if you have any tips of you own which have worked. There will always be different ways that work for different people. Some frequent flyers put it down to just pure luck but our top tips will help increase your chances so why not give them a try next time you fly…you never know!

Africa
Experience Cape Town, South Africa
Located at the top of the Cape Peninsula, Cape Town is probably the most popular destination in South Africa. Overlooking Cape Town is the prominent landmark of Table Mountain. Table Mountain is a level plateau with steep cliffs surrounding it which resembles a table. Frequently covered in clouds, these appear to hang over the edge of the mountain like a table cloth. There are some great beaches around Cape Town. Beaches on the Atlantic Coast have much cooler water than on the Indian Ocean Coast, with up to a 10 degree temperature difference. A short ferry ride away is Robben Island which served as a maximum security prison up until 1991, and is now a museum.
Cape Winelands
Close to Cape Town are The Winelands, popular with wine lovers and a great location for weddings. The Winelands are full of picturesque vineyards that produce some of the worlds best wines. There are six different wine regions, with the most famous being the Stellenbosch Wine region. It is well worth going on one of the many wine tours in the regions.
Garden Route
The Garden Route is a popular and scenic route along the south coast of South Africa, starting at Mossel Bay and finishing at Storms River in the Tsitsikamma National Park. The best way to enjoy the scenic route is to hire a car, to really open up the route to exploration in your own time. For those who would prefer not to drive, Africa’s last remaining passenger steam train runs between Mossel Bay and George.
KwaZulu Natal and The Battlefields
KwaZulu Natal set against the Indian Ocean with a sub tropical climate, is a great all year round holiday destination. The Drakensberg Mountains (which translated means Dragon Mountains) are highest in the KwaZulu Natal region. With spectacular scenery, they are great for hiking or for biking. Zululand is home to the largest concentration of battle sites in South Africa, between the British, Boers and Zulus, and there are tours available of the historic sites. A visit to the region isn’t complete unless you take in the culture and traditions of the hospitable Zulus.
South Africa Safari
South Africa is home to some great malaria free safaris. Sabi Sands Game Reserve situated on the western border of the Kruger National Park has excellent guides, luxury accommodation and fine cuisine. Travelling to Africa – A Guide for the Single or First Timers
Travelling to Africa
If you’re from the West and your thinking of travelling to Africa for the first time or for a holiday, or to meet someone you’ve met from a dating site, then congratulations! If you’ve been before you can probably ignore all this, but if it’s your first time, then it might be of use to you.
Firstly, you’re a lucky person. Not many people can afford to travel to Africa, it’s a long-haul flight in most cases and a lot of Africans would like to be going the other way! Now, do you have family there? Are you meeting someone for the first time? Are you going on a package tour? If you’ve got family or you’re going on a package tour, most things like where you’ll stay and your safety will be taken care of.
How are you travelling?
If you are going alone, then its best to make sure that the person you are meeting at the other end is genuine and you trust that person. If you’re not sure, make a contingency plan in case you get into trouble. Find out where your country embassy is in that country and their phone number. If you’re worried try and make a number of bookings yourself, such as your hotel. A lot of hotels will take email bookings but you can use cheap international calls to phone up a hotel to make your reservation. You’ll be charged a lot if you book into a Sheraton or Holiday Inn however, and sometimes those places can be strict, and sometimes will charge more if you bring a guest to your room.
Health
Before you go make sure you’ve had your relevant jabs. There are certain health risks, the most significant of which are Malaria and HIV/AIDS. Take a trip to your travel clinic, GP or doctor and get the relevant vaccinations. These can take weeks to get, so its best to plan in advance or you may want to find a private travel clinic. Even if you are of African origin, its best to be sure since viruses and other bugs mutate over time and even though you may previously have been immune, you might not be to more recent viruses.
Malaria
Check if your travelling ton area with high rates of malaria. Get the relevant anti-malaria medication from your doctor and take it. You usually have to start the prescription 1-2 weeks prior to travel so ensure you check this. Malaria is a killer and its best not to take a chance. Also get an idea of the symptoms of malaria so you can recognise it in case you catch it anyway. The general symptoms include headache, nausea, fever, vomiting and flu-like symptoms, although these symptoms may differ depending on the type you’ve contracted. Malaria can come on several months after returning from an infected area, and if you get ill after you come back, make sure you mention to any doctor treating you that you’ve been to a malaria infected area.
Sexual Health
If you’re intending to be sexually active then take condoms with you. Some people slur the standard of African condoms however, they are generally of a high standard and can be bought readily and cheaply in most African countries. Diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Syphilis, Gonorrhoea are common. HIV/AIDS, while treatable in the west, is still one of the major killers in Africa, so take care. If you’re going to get married then you can take all the relevant tests then, in the meantime simply play safe. That’s use CONDOMS!
If it turns our you or your partner are HIV positive, its not the end of the world and there are organisations out there to help you cope with the diagnosis and help you find the course of action you are most comfortable with. This is a highly sensitive and complex area so its best to get professional advice where needed.
Country Background
Most developed countries will have detailed country information for travellers available over the internet. The most extensive of these are with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in the UK, and the US Department of State. Read them and absorb them but take them with a pinch of salt as they can unintentionally scare you slightly and put you off travelling. In the bureaucrat’s world, everything foreign is bad and everything indigenous is good. For example, you might find warnings against travelling to Bali due to terrorist activity, but not to Spain although both countries were attacked by al-Qaida terrorists. Just read up as much as you can to ensure you are well informed.
Money
The banking system in Africa generally does not provide as many services as you may expect here in the UK. You might be able to use credit cards and your current bank cards in some countries, but not in others. You may be able to use your bank card in certain establishments, or there may be just one. For example, if you wanted to make a cash withdrawal on your credit card in Uganda (last time we were there), there was only one place you could do it: Barclays Bank on Kampala Road. On the other hand, throughout Kenya you can use a UK bank cards in the machines. You’ll need to check it out. Speak to your bank to see if they have any information.
Avoid taking travellers cheques. These are widely used in fraudulent activities and many places will not accept them. You might not be able to change these into local currency before you travel and might not get good exchange rates anyway.
It’s best to take cash, in such currencies as British Pounds, Euros or US Dollars. The US Dollar is the most widely accepted. Take how much you are going to need and an extra few hundred for contingencies. A lot of people in Africa will instantly convert their prices to US dollars for foreigners anyway, and the dollar is especially useful if you are travelling outside major capital cities where the only foreign money banks will take is the US Dollar. So, even if you’re travelling with Pounds or Euros, its best to get a few US Dollars to be on the safe side. Another thing to take account of is that some countries had a lot of fake US bills distributed after the Iraq wars and may even refuse US Bills which are dated before 1999. So get US Bills which are dated 2000 and later if you are unsure.
Keep your money safe. Don’t put it all in the same place and don’t put any in your suitcase. If you’re out and about put some money in each pocket. Africans like stuffing it in their socks so you might want to put some there as well. Check if your hotel or accommodation has security for passports and money and use them if necessary. Bigger hotels will have a safe in the rooms. Money should not be left in suitcases – Even on your flight to Africa. Customs there have opened suitcases (from personal experiences in Malawi) and taken money that was left in our luggage. Keep money on you and ensure it is safe.
Travel Insurance
Don’t ask. Just get it. Shop around for the best price but ensure everything you need is covered. Take time here as it will save you a lot of money and stress if you do find yourself neededing the help. Getting adequate travel insurance is the best advice we can give here at travelzine.co.uk. It is needed and should not be overlooked under any circumstances. A £20-30 up front cost can save you thousands…even hundreds of thousands if something goes wrong.
Cultural Awareness
If you are from the west or another rich country it’s almost inevitable that local people will have certain perceptions of you. The most common one is that you are rich. Some may assume you have a dollar tree growing in your back garden at home. Remember a lot of these people are in extreme poverty in countries where social security is limited to running orphanages. Expect to be hassled and overcharged sometimes and if you’re travelling alone get a local to look after you. Taxi drivers are sometimes a good choice. On the positive side, most people will just ask for the price of a beer, which is about a dollar for some help.
But whatever you do don’t be arrogant and don’t treat the locals like idiots. There will be lots you might not understand but there’s no excuse for treating people with a lack of respect. Mind your language; swearing is often frowned upon in many African countries. Just remember, you are in someone elses country where the justice system probably wont meet our British expectations.
Visa
In most cases you’ll need a visa when travelling to an African country. These can be bought in advance at the relevant embassy or consulate in your home country, and often can be bought at the border when you arrive, although sometimes there are long queues which can be worrying if you’ve got a connecting flight. Visas can cost more than 65 dollars depending where you go, and generally you can pay in Euros, Pounds or Dollars. If in doubt, take dollars. If you want to be safe you might want to get your visa in advance, especially if we have poor relations with the country you are visiting. Most visitor visas will be issued for up to three months, or the duration of your stay.
Avoiding Trouble
There’s a few of things you can do before and after you get into trouble.
Information: Tell people where you are going and when you’ll be back. If you’re going for a long time then inform the embassy or consulate on your arrival of your stay in the country. Tell your friends or family back home where you’ll be staying. Give someone back home the hotel name, number and any contact details they may need in an emergency.
Documents: Make two photocopies of your passport – the identity page, and if relevant, any visas you need. If it gets stolen then a photocopy is often good enough to prove who you are to get an emergency replacement. Leave one copy at home, and take another with you. If you have a driving licence take this also, as it can be considered evidence of identity if your passport goes missing.
Mobile phones: get your phone unlocked – that’s network unlocked – so any SIM card in the world will work in it. Buy a local SIM card when you get there – they are usually pay as you go, and cost around £10. Then contact your family back home to give them your number there. They can use a cheap international call service to get hold of you if necessary or message you. Get the emergency number for your local embassy or consulate on the phone so you can call your country representatives quickly if necessary.
Money: Western Union offices are all over the place in Africa. It’s a growth industry. So if you get robbed or need money in a hurry, you can get someone back home to send it to you. They can SMS the details to you on your local phone number, but you’ll need some ID to pick it up, and they may ask you a test question (“What’s your dog called?”, for example).
Police: If you get into trouble with the police then stay calm. Sadly, a lot of police officers are very poorly paid and only too happy to take a bribe. If you’ve been really criminal then you are certainly in trouble so insist on your right to see your ambassador or consul. If it’s something petty or something you’ve just been accused of for the hell of it, it will almost certainly be easier to pay whatever is needed to have the matter buried. HOWEVER WE ADVOCATE THAT YOU DO NOT BREAK THE LAW WHEREVER YOU GO, and you should know differing laws for where you go. For example, in a lot of African countries homosexuality is illegal.
Lastly, We have talked a lot about the issues you may encounter but this is all just to ensure you are well aware of how Africa works. At the end of it all, We at travelzine love Africa and have visited many countries like Malawi, Mozambique, Kenya, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Egypt and more. Its a beautiful continent with absolutely amazing people. If you follow our guidelines, you should have an amazing holiday that you will cherish for a very long time! The Ultimate Wildlife Experience – Game Viewing In South Africa
Of the hundreds of awesome activities that South Africa has on offer, probably the most popular activity on offer is Game Viewing. Game viewing on any of the many game reserves in South Africa provides an opportunity to see South African wild life in all their beauty in their natural habitat. On a self-drive expedition, with a guide, on horseback, on elephant back – whatever your preference, you’re assured of a memorable game viewing experience.
Probably the most well known game viewing location in South Africa is the Kruger National Park. Home to South Africa’s Big 5, the Kruger National Park offers an incredible self-drive route through the open veld where you’ll see countless variations of buck, zebra’s, giraffe, leopard, lion, springbok, cheetah, eland and countless others. (There is a check list available at: http://www.sa-venues.com/wildlife/). Self-driven game viewing trips offer the benefits of being able to determine the pace of you journey, however without a guide who knows the area well, you might miss out on seeing something special.
The Kruger National Parks game viewing isn’t limited only to self-drive expeditions. The park has been very well developed to cater for many different preferences. Guided groups will be taken out into the bushveld, where you’ll camp overnight and experience the bushveld at night with all its fascinating sounds and sights.
The Eastern Cape offers much in the way of game viewing. Whilst most game reserves offer Big 5 game viewing, the popular Addo Elephant Park just outside Port Elizabeth lays claim to being the only park in South Africa that offers Big 7 game viewing! The 372 000 ha park is home to all of the South African Big 5 and in addition, there’s a 120 000 ha marine zone where you can spot the majestic whale and the much feared great white shark.
10 Minutes outside of Port Elizabeth, is the Seaview Lion and Game Park. Although it’s doesn’t offer game viewing of all the South African Big 5, it does offer the incredible opportunity to interact and play with lion cubs. R40 will get you up to about 30 minutes playtime with either the very young cubs, or the slightly older and more boisterous cubs. It’s an unforgettable experience and definitely worth doing. As you drive through the park, you’ll pass by giraffe, zebra and all sorts of buck. The Seaview Lion park also offers the rare opportunity to view the unique White Lion as well as the beautiful tiger.
Kwa Zulu Natal also has many choices for exceptional game viewing. The St Lucia National Park offers not only beautiful game viewing, but is also known as a birder’s paradise because of a the enormous variety of birdlife. Swaziland’s game viewing is one of the top in the country because of its raw beauty and rugged terrain. The Swaziland game viewing parks are not overly commercial and thus offer game viewing in its most natural form.
One of the hardest animals to spot when you’re game viewing in South Africa, is the leopard. Because of its reclusive nature – spending most of the day in the trees out of sight – game viewing trips don’t often get to see this incredible animal. However the game viewing parks in Mpumalanga offer some of the highest concentrations of leopard per square kilometer in South Africa. A day or night spent in most of the game parks in Mpumalanga is bound to include a number of leopard sightings – definitely worth the trip
Game viewing in South Africa offers more diversity of wildlife and more excitement than any other country in the world – make sure you don’t miss the wonders of game viewing in South Africa.

10 Things Travellers Need When Visiting Cape Town
Cape Town is a beautiful city with rich cultural events and the top 5 attractions in all of South Africa. When you visit Cape Town, South Africa, you will need to make sure you are prepared, so your trip is more enjoyable. The more preparation you do before you leave, the less you have to worry about once you get there. You are then free to relax and enjoy your holiday.
- Sun Protection
The sun in South Africa can be harsh, so you’ll need to wear sun protective lotion, as well as protective clothing like hats or visors to keep the sun out of your eyes and face. - Copies of Passport and Travel Documents
You always want to make sure you have more than one copy of your passport and travel documents in case you lose them or have them stolen. These are the only means by which you can return to your country, so protect them well. There have been many instances where holiday makers have found themselves in this scenario and have had their travel documents stolen. Be safe and ensure you take copies and keep them safe whilst ensuring they are in a separate place to your actual documents. You can hide them in clothing tucked away in your suitcase or shoes/boots. - Proper Clothing
Light cotton clothing is advised in the summer. The evenings get cooler so pack warmer clothing as well. Dress is typically casual in Cape Town even for evenings at the theatre or restaurants. - Good Accommodations
There are many good 5* hotels in South Africa, do your research beforehand and book one that caters to your needs. We will be posting up some expert reviews for hotels in South Africa so make sure you check them out! - Money for Tipping
South African currency is called the Rand (R). The Rand is split into 100 cents, similar to the UK Pound and pence. You will need to carry money with you to tip people for service such as wait staff, taxi drivers, hotel staff, etc. 10% is a fair tip in Cape Town. - Safety Precautions
Never walk unpopulated streets of South Africa alone. Do not wear excessive jewellery or watches and keep the amount of cash you carry to a minimum. The Police emergency number is 10111. If you hire a car, its best not to go for the most high end models as this shows wealth and that can be a dangerous place to be if you are driving at night. Go for a comfortable mid-range model like Ford Focus, Toyota’s for example. - Immunisations
While there are no international immunisations needed to enter South Africa, you should be aware that Malaria is a risk throughout the year. So protect yourself from diseases as you feel necessary. It’s better to be safe than sorry. - Local Driving Rules
In Cape Town everyone drives on the left side of the road. Many of the National roadways have tolls so always bring money with you if you are planning on travelling by car. Seat belts are required and if you have a young child with you, you should reserve a car seat in advance. - Local Prices
You should have some understanding of the local prices, so you don’t get surprised or taken advantage of while on holiday in Cape Town. The average McDonalds meal is R23.00, bottled water is R5.00, a ticket to the movies is R30.00 and dinner out is about R100.00 each person. - Travel Insurance
Medical services are available at private hospitals and doctors in private practice. You should have some form of travel insurance that covers medical expenses. Again, it’s better to be safe than sorry in case something does happen during the trip away. Whilst on the subject of travel insurance, make sure you check the small print and policy documents so there are know suprises. It does take time and effort but it’s worth it in the long run if you do find yourself trying to make a claim.
